DennisFlood.com Photos of the Week - March 2005

Fire and ice ... signs, garbage and other annoyances ... rock and roll music. March 2005 was a busy, productive and very good month for me. I certainly had a lot on the go, and managed to see and do quite a bit. In hindsight, I'm amazed that I was able to get out and take so many photos will still putting in a full effort at school.

The Game Must Go On

The Game Must Go On
March 31, 2005
High level hockey continues in Toronto the day after the big fire. All-star games were cancelled due to the fire, but they resumed less than 24 hours later, less than 50m from the smouldering ashes.

The West Wall Crumbles

The West Wall Crumbles
March 30, 2005
Darkness falls over the fire scene, but as the west wall begins to fall, a fresh source of oxygen fuels the ever-growing fire. Firefighters continued to wage war on the fire overnight.

Evacuation Begins

Evacuation Begins
March 30, 2005
About an hour and a half after the first emergency crews arrived on the scene, police began to evacuate the area as the fire continued to grow. Strong winds were also a concern.

A firefighter adjusts the spray of the hose at the end of this ladder truck. The fire was quickly spreading throughout the building.

Fire Watchers

Spectators gather to watch as a warehouse/factory on the north side of Toronto goes up in smoke and flames.

Beaver Candy

March 27, 2005
Any idea what beavers use for toothpicks? Surely they must get stuff caught in those big teeth from time to time. Sometimes I wonder.

Roll Up The Rim Then Throw it on the Ground

Roll Up The Rim Then Throw it on the Ground
March 26, 2005
I'm not sure what the stats really are, but if 8 out of 9 coffee drinkers roll up the rim and lose ... how many of those 8 throw their cup on the ground and sulk. If the Humber College parking lot is any indication, I'd say that many of the 8 are. Bu hao!

North Toronto Ice Floes

North Toronto Ice Floes
March 25, 2005
Spring can't come soon enough for the people of Toronto who have been held prisoners by the unrelenting ice floes of the frigid Canadian North. Where is the Army when you need it?

University College through the Window

March 23, 2005
A surprisingly powerful early spring snowstorm obscures the view of the University of Toronto's famous University College building. The photo was taken from Convocation Hall.

Power Chopper

Power Chopper
March 22, 2005
A quiet walk in the wilderness was rudely interrupted by a noisy chopper and some ugly power lines. The price of civilization I guess.

Subway Signage

Subway Signage
March 17, 2005
As I begin my journey home after a busy St. Patrick's day, I couldn't help but notice these signs in the subway station. I was very careful not to smoke while minding the gap at Bay station. Phwew!

No Balls and No Bikes

No Balls and No Bikes
March 17, 2005
Why is it that I find this downtown Toronto sign funny? Maybe I'm just crazy. Or maybe the words are just off. What do you think? "Bicycle Parking and Ball Playing Prohibited".

My Greatest Canadian

My Greatest Canadian
March 17, 2005
Months after the show concluded, signs of CBC's highly successful Greatest Canadian series are still evident. Apparently I'm not the only person who supported Terry Fox as Canada's greatest Canadian ever.

Healy and Orr Live

Healy and Orr Live
March 05, 2005
Brockville's (mostly) acoustic duo, Healy and Orr played to a small but highly entertained crowd in the Athens Joshua Bates Centre -- if you didn't catch them live, maybe you can get your hands on the video.

Trail Wideners

Trail Wideners
March 04, 2005
Mountain bikers are evil. They wreck trails. They destroy habitat. They widen trails. They lead to erosion. The fattest mountain bike tire is 3 inches wide. Everybody loves snowmobiles though -- you hardly notice the noise, the stink or the 16 inch wide track and ten foot wide trails. Injustice.

The Flood Pool Emporium

The Flood Pool Emporium
March 04, 2005
With the murals fading and crumbling away to nothing, there are fewer reasons for out-of-towners to make a visit to Athens. However, after 30 years in business, the Flood Pool Emporium is still going strong. It takes a good set of balls to stick around for 30 years.

Oh Canada

Oh Canada
March 03, 2005
Only steps from the Canadian Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, these eight maple leaf clad flags fly high. The sky was blue, the wind was strong, and as usual, Ottawa was freezing!

GJ is still GJ

GJ is still GJ
March 03, 2005
Whether you call him Gordie or Grady, GJ is still the best guitar player and most inspiring musician I've ever witnessed in the flesh. After countless shows over a span of nearly ten years, I am still amazed by GJ every single time. This night was no different. Thanks GJ!

Gordie, Ben and Chris

Gordie, Ben and Chris
March 03, 2005
Gordie Johnson, Ben Richardson and Chris Layton pool their collective musical powers and talents to form a new and so far relatively unknown (at least in Kingston) band known as Grady. Fewer than 100 people were still standing at the end of the show. Not for long.

Loud, intense and full of energy, Grady blasts out their unmistakable sound minutes before the strike of midnight.
