I take great pride in the quality of the photographic prints
available for sale through DennisFlood.com. I do not have a traditional
dark room, and do not develop nor print my own photos. I do however
use professional printing labs to print my photos. I take time to
learn about the strengths and weaknesses of each printer and print
making technique, and only offer what I feel are the best quality
prints available.
The exact printing methods will vary from photo to photo. Factors
include the nature of the original (colour slide or negative, black
and white negative or digital file), the nature of the photo, and
the desired end-use. I don't believe that there is a single best
print method for all photos.
Prints from Slides
The majority of the photos in my archive were shot on professional
colour slide film. When I make prints from slide film, I will
either use a high-resolution film scanner to scan the film, resulting
in a digital print, or, I will rely on my print makers to make
a print directly from the original slide. In most cases I will
scan the slide as I have found that this delivers more consistently
pleasing results than prints directly from slides. After scanning
and colour correcting, I will normally print the photos with an
Epson professional inkjet printer, or, have the photo printed
on traditional matte photo paper. In instances where especially
large prints are required, I will have prints made directly from
the slide, as I have found that the traditional print process delivers
better results on the big prints that most current scanner/printer
combinations can.
Prints from Colour and Black and White Negatives
In almost all cases, I have prints made directly from the negative
using traditional photo printing methods. To date, I have been able
to obtain better results from traditional prints than from digital
prints from negatives. As fewer and fewer print makers are offering
true hand-made black and white prints, I cannot guarantee that black
and white prints bought through DennisFlood.com will indeed be hand
printed.
Digital Photos
Many of my more recent photos have been shot digitally with either
a Nikon D100 or a Nikon D1x professional digital SLR. I most commonly
shoot photos in Nikon's NEF (raw) format so as to obtain the best
results possible from digital. Naturally, most digital photos will
be adjusted for brightness, contrast and colour balance in Photoshop.
I do not assume a license to excessively manipulate my photos just
because they were shot digitally. Like my digitally scanned photos
from slides, my digital photos will generally be printed by either
an Epson professional inkjet printer, or machine printed onto traditional
matte photo paper.
Paper Used
Though my print makers occasionally change the specific paper
that they are using, I aim to offer all prints from digital sources
on two different paper types, professional inkjet paper (normally
matte or semi-gloss) or traditional photo paper (normally matte).
Inkjet prints have gained in popularity in the past few years as
they are able to deliver outstanding colour ranges with exceptional
durability. In essence, the definition of 'photo quality' has changed
with the evolution of these high-end prints. Alternatively,
you may also choose to have your prints made on traditional matte
photo paper. This paper is an excellent choice for bringing out
vibrant colours and detail in photos. Please note that not all
papers are available for all sizes.
