Photo Contest Results |
The following photos were selected as the best of
2002 by the voters who participated in the contest. You can also
view the original entry form. |

Sunsets and Sunrises Winner: DaHsi Sunrise
The intense light of the hot tropical sun illuminated the morning
mist. Yet at the same time, the steep mountains in the background
sit, waiting for their first direct light of the day. The final
vote received before the end of the contest decided this category,
relegating High Mountain Sunset to second place. |
| |

Sports Winner: Morning Surf
This photo was taken only a few minutes before DaHsi sunrise. As
the sun had not yet moved above the horizon, a quick burst of light
from my flash illuminated the surfer, seemingly lifting him out
of the photo. Additionally, this photo tied for Best Overall Photo.
Honourable mentions to Fresh Mountain Air ... that photo required
significantly more effort to get into position for. |

The Big City Winner: Fifth Avenue Cathedral
Ingredients: Fifth Avenue Manhattan on a Friday evening. Shoppers
everywhere. Rush-hour traffic. Fading sun turning the sky slightly
purple. Girlfriend shopping. Ominous St. Patrick's Cathedral looming.
One tripod and about two seconds. Result? Something I didn't expect
to find in New York. A very close second was another shot from the
same evening, Electric City, taken at Times Square. |

Everyday Things in Taipei Winner:
Transportation
I love bicycles, and Taipei is full of them. Though the streets
are crowded with cars and scooters, the bicycle is still a staple
mode of transportation for millions of residents. This simple photo
was, strangely enough, taken while walking to the closest subway
station to my home. Lanterns, also taken within a few minutes of
my home finished a close second. |
| |

Mountain Biking
Winner: Ridge Rider
I developed my love for mountain biking while living in Edmonton.
I developed my love for photography after leaving Edmonton. Upon
returning to Edmonton in January 2002, I took my first winter ride
in two years. The trails and the large prairie sky were just as
I had remembered them. Ridge Rider and Onboard captured virtually
all of the votes for this category. |
| |

Simple Themes Winner:
Leaf on Snow
This truly simple photo of a leaf sitting on snow received more
votes than any other photo. A truly brilliant winter day, I remember
the feeling of the warm sun, the cold wind and the utter silence
that encompassed me. I truly love winter. Crashing Wave (incidentally
taken on the same day as DaHsi Sunrise and Morning Surf) placed
second in this category. |
| |

Open Category Winner: Oliver Looking Up
As I should have expected, this category was fairly wide open.
All photos received votes, but The Light seemed to catch the eye
of more voters than the others. This tunnel represented the end
of a very long and challenging, wet hike, and the light at the end
truly symbolized a personal victory for each of the hikers in photo.
Always happy Oliver (my sister's dog) Looking Up and Morning Hike
were tied, a few votes behind, for second place. |
