Taipei is one of the top cities in Asia for offroad mountain biking.
Though most of the stellar trails lie on the perimeter of the city,
The Gas Plant Trail sits in the middle. A popular area for hikers and
bikers, the Formosan Fat Tire Association has popularized the area for
mountain bikers as well. A short 3 1/2 km loop, the trail takes less
than an hour to ride. However, the trail packs a bigger pound-for-pound
punch than any other trail in Taiwan.
This video was shot over the 2003 Chinese New Year holiday when free
time was ample, and hikers weren't too numerous. The majority of the
filming was done by Michele (the Kid), with riders John "Slick"
McHale, Geoff "the Dominator" Quirk, Stephen "Wild"
Wilde and Dennis "Doughnut" Flood handling the riding for
the shoot. All present were impressed with Mr. McHale's grit and determination
- it should be noted that "Slick" rode the entire trail with
a flagrant disrespect for traction, using road slicks where they surely
don't belong.
The Formosan
Fat Tire Association is the premier source of English mountain biking
information in Taiwan. You can view their coverage of the Gas
Plant trail and more
on their site.
If you are experiencing troubles playing the .WMV file, you may need
to upgrade to a newer version of Windows Media Player. You can do so
here.
Given that this is the Internet, and connection speeds aren't quite
what they should be, this movie has been heavily compressed. If you'd
