Hsintien (XinDian) is a little known suburb of Taipei, the capital
city of Taiwan (politically incorrectly referred to as the Republic
of China.) I have called this area of Taiwan home for nearly two years;
I was drawn to the area by its nearby mountains, calm, clean green lake,
fresh air, and quietness. This being Asia, these terms are all relative.
I'm a firm believer that the best way to get to know a place is to
move through it and see as much as possible through your own eyes, either
on foot or on bike. Over the course of a few months in the spring and
summer of 2002, a few friends and I compiled some interesting video
footage, while biking in Hsintien. The aim wasn't to pretend that were
professional riders, or anything of the sort. Instead, we tried to focus
on some of the unique aspects of life for foreigners in Taiwan, and
show some of the odd things that we see in a typical, "normal"
day ... on a bike.
Thanks to Dave and Michele for their help with filming this movie,
and to Jen for lending us her camera. Special thanks also to CCR and
David Wilcox for the tunes (used without permission). Please be warned
that there are a few dirty words in the early part of the video. If
you or the people near your computer are easily offended, please cover
your (or their) ears.
If you are experiencing troubles playing the .WMV file, you may need
to upgrade to a newer version of Windows Media Player. You can do so
here.
Given that this is the Internet, and connection speeds aren't quite
what they should be, this movie has been heavily compressed. If you'd
like to purchase a copy in a higher resolution VCD format, please contact
me directly. Enjoy the movie.
