DennisFlood.com Photos of the Week - August 2005

August 2005 is a very busy and important month for me. Lots of travel, lots of animals, lots of buildings all around. And then of course there are the usual signs that always seem to catch my eye.

Sunflower on a Sunny Day

I think I've used this name before, but, it is pretty appropriate. The bright white building in the background helps make the flower's colours pop even more than usual.

On Door County's winding Highway 42, I had to keep a close eye on our bikes that were sitting on our brand spanking new bike rack. Fortunately the rack worked.

For the most important days in life, make sure to have plenty of lechon (Filipino roasted pig) on hand. Thank you Mr. Pig, you were tasty!

Coming and Going

So confused by the excessive number of pictographs, the citizens of Madison simply refused to come or go anywhere near this path.

Olbrich Gardens Kaleidoscope Madness

I'll admit that I haven't looked through a kaleidoscope in ages, but I thought that this one was really cool. Nature makes for better imagery than bits of paper and plastic.

Ella

Ella's Carousel
August 18, 2005
Ella's Deli in Madison has to be one of the most unusual eateries I've ever been to -- the outside is tame in comparison, only having a classic carousel to keep the merry going 'round.

Expensive Ceiling

The inside the Wisconsin State Capitol building is filled with all sorts of gems, literally and otherwise. This colourful ceiling is just one of many treats for the eyes.

Lizard Food

Who knew that this lizard (iguana?) ate such healthy food? Not I. I should go to the zoo more often.

Lion Eyes

Ever stared a lion straight in the eyes? I have. Yep, a big male lion from about three feet away. Yikes!

High Elevation Moonrise

I guess it wasn't a true moonrise, but as the plane climbed above 35,000 feet the moon suddenly became visible.

Huge yellow signs greet airport travellers in Boston ... whether you want a taxi or not, you can't help but see these massive eyesores.

Logan Airport Traffic

Riding the shuttle bus/van from Logan airport isn't exactly luxurious, but it does at least give a good view of the crazed traffic all around.

Preparing for the upcoming season, the grounds crew at the Goodman Softball Complex water the field early in the morning.

Scottish Thistle

Quite far from home, this about-to-bloom thistle looks like the official flower of Scotland, at least to my untrained eye.

Mulch

The Eagle Heights Community Garden at UW-Madison is full of fruits and vegetables from around the world. Even the mulch sign is multilingual -- English, Chinese and Arabic (I think).

Hanging in MKE

This basketball hoop isn't seeing much action at the moment, but judging by the artwork on the backboard, it sees plenty of action.

A Sign That Lies

August 04, 2005
I was very disappointed to learn that not all signs tell the truth. The sign clearly says "This office is open all year round", but the office was closed. Liar, liar, pants on fire ...

Smoke Break

With fewer and fewer places to go, this smoker seems quite content to puff by the window ... maybe if the cigarette is outside of the window, it isn't actually considered smoking at work? Maybe.

What's better than a day of fishing on the lake? How about an evening of fish guts in the sink?
